Piano Department of R.Glier Kyiv State Higher Music College has existed since 1868. Representatives of Leipzig and Petersburg schools were the first teachers of piano class. Outstanding teachers performers such as V.Pukhalsky, F.Blumenfield, A.Shtos-Petrova, A.Dobkevych, G.Beklemishev, K.Mikhailov, A.Nikolaev, G.Khodorovsky, S.Tarnovsky, G.Neihauz laid the foundation of Kyiv piano school resented, in the first turn, by the great pianist Vladimir Horowitz.
The second half of the century is connected with the name of professor E.Slivak, A.Yankelevich, A.Lufer, O.Eidelman, later V.Topilin, O.Aleksandrov, L.Shur and others.
Graduates of the College - I.Riabov, L.Tsvirko, A.Roschina, T.Roschina, L.Prudnikova, V.Selivokhin and many others work as professors and assistants professors in leading musical academies of Ukraine and abroad.
The Honoured Art Worker of Ukraine, O.Verikovska was the Head of the Department for many years.
150 students study in the Department; among them there are 15 foreigners. They study art of piano playing in class of special piano and piano ensemble; chamber ensemble and concertmaster classes.
Graduates of the Piano Department obtain qualification: piano teacher, concertmaster, artist of ensemble.
Students of Piano Department have possibility to perform in prestigious concert halls of Ukraine, perform with leading symphony orchestras, take part in national and international festivals and competitions, tour in Ukraine, the USA, Latin America, Russia, France, Poland, Slovenia and Israel.
Besides subjects established by government standard of higher education of Ukraine they study history of world and Ukrainian music and culture, history of music, harmony, polyphony, analysis of performing styles, have long teaching practice.
The Department established and has carried out such wide-ranging creative actions as:
- International Competition for Young Pianists in Memory of Vladimir Horowitz;
- International Festival "Kyiv Summer Music Evenings";
- International Summer Music Academy;
- Festival "Shevchenkivskiy berezen"
- O.Verykivska Regional Competition for Young Pianists.
Teachers of the College conduct master classes outside the College: in Ukraine, Russia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Germany, Switzerland, the USA, Korea and others.
